Welcome to the Worthing Chapter of SitP! We are like the Radio 4 or BBC4 of going out for an evening...

If you've ever wondered where all the interesting people are, you've just found us!

Anyone can be a skeptic - we have atheists, agnostics, christians and a muslim in our membership list. If you are on our email database, you should get notifications of our events. The Skeptics motto is, Respect People, Challenge Ideas.

Our usual venue is the Vintner's function room (at the rear - it used to be a Methodist church) but, when we have a big event we hire St Paul's Arts Centre (which was also a church). We meet at 8pm on the second or third Thursday in the month and sometimes we have extra meetings in between the regular ones. Apart from interesting talks and debates, we do comedy and musical events and show movies, all with a skeptical slant.

We charge a £4 or £5 door admission fee (unless otherwise stated) depending on the guest, but you can join our membership card scheme for £25/year. The money goes towards our speaker's expenses, room hire and publicity printing costs. We are a non-profit organisation.

We also have a Facebook group (Worthing Skeptics) where you can post and comment https://www.facebook.com/groups/1460923914189682/

We would love to see you!

What's the talk about?

Burning carbon must be driven from our cheap-energy economy on a global scale - and soon - to stop a looming disaster. But is there a workable way to drive out Carbon? If nations, corporations or individuals ‘do the right thing’ and burn less carbon won’t that just make coal, oil and gas cheaper for everyone else? Just how cheap does installing new solar need to be to make it cheaper than turning on the valves in the Saudi oil fields?

It is easy to lose hope that change is possible, especially in Trump-World. The USA is the key to change and a group originating in the US 'Citizens Climate Lobby’ (CCL) is doing well there (notably with Republicans). They advocate a policy of a Carbon Fee which is all used to make a Dividend to the populace, thus making for a policy that is effective and politically attractive (most people are made better off). There really is hope. In this talk a representative from CCL, Ed Atkinson, will outline the policy options and their merits. He’ll include Cap & Trade, subsidising renewables and efficiency measures, divestment, Carbon Taxes and its variant the CCL policy of Carbon Fee and Dividend. Ed will be delighted to get awkward questions on these policy issues leading to discussion in the SitP group. The science of climate change will not be covered.

In between the various comedic activites, Kevin Precious attends his local humanist group - he's an agnostic, folks - where he loves a good old debate about the big questions in life.

Expect jokes and stories then, about his time as an RE teacher, being a humanist, the God-Shaped Hole, and the philosophy of religion... and you can ask him a few questions of your own afterwards, if you wish.

Kevin Precious is a former RE teacher turned stand-up comedian and promoter. Besides having played many of the top clubs in the land, he also promotes shows in arts centres and theatres under the Barnstormers Comedy banner. He has previously toured the country with a stand-up show entitled 'Not Appropriate', dedicated to the business of teaching.

Who?
Richard Burdett

What's the talk about?

Richard Burdett looks at advertising from both the consumer’s and the advertiser’s perspective. Can consumers trust what they’re seeing, reading, hearing and clicking on? And, in an increasingly fragmented and fractured media environment, can advertisers trust the data on which they’re making multi-million pound investment decisions?

Richard began his career at Saatchi & Saatchi, spending eleven years working with clients such as BA, BP, Cadbury Schweppes and Sainsbury’s. He then moved from advertising to the fledgling world of multi-channel television, initially as Head of Ad Sales for The Discovery Channel and subsequently as Head of Marketing for UKTV. Next stop was Vice Chairman of CIA (now MEC) one of the world’s largest media buying agencies. In 2003 he became Head of 4Creative, Channel 4’s in-house ad agency, working on shows such as Lost, Desperate Housewives, Shameless and Jamie’s School Dinners as well as the launches of More4 and Film4.

He is currently MD of Horse & Country TV, a thematic channel which does exactly what it says on the tin. The channel has brought over fifty new advertisers on to TV and was one of five nominees for Best Factual Channel in this year’s Broadcast awards, up against BBC3, BBC4, Discovery and History.

Bentley Crudgington

What's the talk about?

Bentley is a research scientist with an unhealthy interest in infectious diseases. His current area of research is in veterinary vaccine development (actually its metaphylactic intervention strategies for outbreak scenarios, but no one likes a showoff). He also runs Guildford Cafe Scientifique, Guildford Skeptics and likes it when Science and Art get it on.

As a species Humans like to explore new territories, play with animals, put things in our mouths and have a flagrant disregard for genital safety. As a result we encounter some pretty nasty diseases. Fortunately there are vaccines but what exactly are they and why are they so controversial? Vaccines are wonderfully weird, from snorting scabs in the Old Orient to genetic chimeras cloned in laboratories, they have protected humans and animals from disease for nearly two hundred years. Unfortunately there are plenty new diseases waiting in the dark and old enemies itching for a comeback.

Richard Robinson

What's the talk about?

If we’re looking for an animal to symbolize us in the office, it has to be an ape, doesn’t it? Selfish, aggressive, competitive. But is aggression all there is to life and work? Is there no room for gentler impulses of friendship, sharing or caring? The answer is yes: meet your inner ant - respectful, cooperative and empathic.

Richard Robinson shows us animals are more like us than we knew, and we are more like animals than we want to know. As well as your inner ant, you may like to take a tour of your inner Portuguese man'o war, your inner assassin bug ... or even your inner Brussels sprout.

Richard runs the Brighton Science Festival. In another life he also co-founded the busker’s pitch in Covent Garden, and Spitting Image.

What's the talk about?

Kevin Friery is a skeptical Psychotherapist. With a background in Psychology and Counselling he has been closely involved with the world of psychological therapies since a time when they hadn't discovered the 'C' in CBT.

One of his claims to fame (Try and stop him talking about it!) is that he has appeared several times on BBC 1's The Big Questions offering the voice of skepticism and reason in the face of some very vocal True Believers.

A Bit Of Slap & Tickle takes a close and skeptical look at some of the 'treatments' for common mental health conditions, and looks at the people who profess themselves to be 'practitioners'. It looks at the meaning of effectiveness and explores our relationship with placebos and comes up with some uncomfortable conclusions.
