Guys, while covid 19 prevents us from using pubs, we can be found online - go to Facebook group Skeptics in the Hub and join in with our live online events.

You can post comments and questiosn or even join us onscreen!

Afterwards, the show remains as a podcast.

Welcome to the Worthing Chapter of SitP! We are like the Radio 4 or BBC4 of going out for an evening...

If you've ever wondered where all the interesting people are, you've just found us!

Anyone can be a skeptic - we have atheists, agnostics, christians and a muslim in our membership list. If you are on our email database, you should get notifications of our events.

The Skeptics motto is, Respect People, Challenge Ideas.

We meet at 8pm on the second or third Wednesday in the month and sometimes we have extra meetings in between the regular ones. Apart from interesting talks and debates, we do comedy and musical events and show movies, all with a skeptical slant.

We charge a £5 door admission fee (unless otherwise stated) depending on the guest. The money goes towards our speaker's expenses, room hire and publicity printing costs. We are a non-profit organisation.

We also have a Facebook group (Worthing Skeptics) where you can post and comment https://www.facebook.com/groups/1460923914189682/

We are currently meeting in the function room of the Grand Victoria Hotel - opposite Worthing station.

You don't have to be a member - just come along, we would love to see you!

What's the talk about?

Jeremy is a rights-based animal advocate. He focuses on making videos highlighting the unique personalities of our animal cousins at FRIEND Animal Sanctuary as well as other sanctuaries internationally.

Jeremy also makes informational YouTube videos, does street outreach, mentors new vegans, supports the largest vegan events in the UK, has appeared on the radio as well as podcasts. He also provides free resources and support for both vegans and the vegan-curious through his website www.VeganInteractions.com.

Do other animals experience life? If so, does this give them a valid claim to basic moral rights, which would be violated when we use them?

This interactive talk will include these topics and more exploring the philosophy of animal rights. Bring your questions and passion for critical thinking so we can all explore this topic further together.

Dr Stephen Dewitt

What's the talk about?

Humans make judgements and decisions of staggering sophistication every day, and routinely solve problems entirely unachievable by modern AI. There is a popular trend to see humans as biased reasoners, but this is only half the picture. This talk will present modern psychological understanding of how humans incorporate their vast banks of knowledge about how the world works and what is already true, with new information to form new beliefs. We will see how this ability allows people to make huge leaps of inference from very limited information, but also how this double edged sword can lead to the most notorious biases such as confirmation bias. It ends with some ideas on how the power of human intuition can be harnessed while minimising bias.

Dr Stephen Dewitt is a teaching fellow at University College London. His PhD and current research focuses on how humans update their beliefs in light of new information, and how they handle uncertainty and complexity when reasoning about the world.

Who?
Ariane Sherine

What's the talk about?

Comedy writer and journalist Ariane Sherine created and organised the Atheist Bus Campaign, persuading Richard Dawkins and Humanists UK to support her – and buses with variations on the slogan “There’s probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life” ran in 13 countries across the globe.

As a result, Ariane received an Inbox full of hate mail from Christians, which eventually led to a major nervous breakdown and suicidal ideation. She ended her journalistic career, and didn’t write again for over three years.

In this talk, she will tell the full story of how therapy and medication saved her life, prompting her to write her new book, Talk Yourself Better: A Confused Person’s Guide to Therapy, Counselling and Self-Help.

Ariane will also be signing copies of Talk Yourself Better. 5.00 on the door.

YOU!

What's the talk about?

Our plan to become an ACTIVE skeptics group is progressing!

Following our interactive Critical Thinking Brainstorm last month we are staging another event that you can positively engage in!

Do you remember Brian Edwards who debated me a year ago?

On May 15th we will play his video "The Bible: an authentic book" and shred it!

Our committee will be onstage stopping and starting the playback and taking notes.

If you spot a fallacy, error, claim, assumption, attempt to smuggle an untruth or any other problem, just shout OBJECTION!

I even object to the inclusion of the Union Jack on the cover of the video!

We will stop the video and talk about the objection before continuing to show it...

When complete, I will edit the video with our reviews, send it back to Brian and flood the internet with it!

This will be more fun than a pub quiz!

Who wants to play?

£2 on the door.
